One such incident happened on the third day of the fourth Test against England in Ranchi when he warned his teammate Sarfaraz Khan from attempting a risky move.
Sarfaraz Khan, the 26-year-old batsman, was fielding at long-on when Rohit Sharma asked him to come to a silly point, a position very close to the batsman. Sarfaraz obliged but decided to field without a helmet, which is mandatory for safety reasons. Rohit Sharma noticed this and quickly walked up to him and said, “Oye, hero nahi banne ka” (Oi, don’t be a hero), in a sarcastic tone. He also explained to him how dangerous it was to field without a helmet at that position.
The umpire Kumar Dharmasena also intervened and told Sarfaraz that he could not field without a helmet. Sarfaraz then waited for the helmet to arrive and wore it before taking his position. It was a good decision, as only two balls later, a defensive shot from the England batsman Shoaib Bashir hit Sarfaraz on the helmet. Fortunately, he was not injured and continued to field.
The video of the incident was shared widely on social media and received a lot of reactions from fans and experts. Even the Delhi Police used it to spread awareness about the importance of wearing a helmet while driving. Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, who was commentating on the match, said, “You could hear Rohit saying, ‘Oye, hero nahi banne ka’. Very Rohit Sharma style to say it. Not the usual way here. No need to be a hero, wait for your helmet here. When you’re fielding at that position, no risks, please. Get that helmet on. Even the umpire letting Sarfaraz know that.”
Rohit Sharma and Sarfaraz Khan share a good rapport and have played together for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Rohit Sharma had also promised Sarfaraz’s father Naushad Khan, who is also his coach, that he would take care of his son. This incident showed that Rohit Sharma was true to his word and cared for his young teammate.
